The Client:
The client is a leading provider of Point of Sale, Payment management, program registration and facility-booking software for the Local Governments, Parks and Recreation Industry. The product allowed the users to manage and control various transactions through it's rich set of maintenance and reporting features. The product also allowed some of its features to be accessed over the web and over telephone.


The Challenge:

The scope of the project involved testing the application (structured and unstructured), logging of defects into the client's defect database, tracking the status of defects, verification of defects fixed by the client and status update. The key challenge was effective co-ordination between our offshore team and the client's on-site team.


The Solution:
Sopra India created a dedicated team at its offshore development centre for the client. The offshore team worked as an extension of the client's in-house IT team and had a Project Manager and Test Lead, as well as testers and developers.

The project was planned in three phases:

  • The first phase was the Study Phase. The study included going through the existing documentation as well as interaction with the client (through tele conferences and query documents) to understand the intent of various features of the modules and the way these features were implemented. The team also studied the formats that were used by the client to prepare its own Test Plans.
  • The second phase involved the preparation of the Test Plan and setting up the Test Environment. The requirements were translated into Test Plans to ensure that no requirements went untested. The client reviewed the initial Test Plans to ensure that these Test Plans met their expectations. Also, the Test Environment was replicated at Sopra India’s centre.
  • The third phase involved Test Plan Execution and testing and bug verification. Test Plans were executed and defects identified were logged into the Client's defect database. The status of these defects was monitored and defect resolutions verified. Apart from structured testing (using documented test plans), the application was also subjected to 'random' testing based on the intent of various features under purview.
  • The testing team at the offshore development centre worked as an extension of the client's in-house team and used various collaborative tools to communicate effectively with the client.
